If you are in the beauty and wellness industry, you have probably heard of booth rentals. For professionals ready to branch out and start their own business, booth rental is a more affordable option than opening their own salon/spa. When we refer to booth rental there are actually two different types: suite or chair.
If you want the most freedom, rent a suite. A suite is a mini salon within a salon. You have the keys to your own space and you decorate. You set your own hours, prices and products. This also means that you are responsible for all overhead costs: products, tools, towels, gowns, marketing, etc. Utility costs and Wi-Fi is usually included in your rent. Housekeeping of common areas and on-site laundry are also covered at most places.
Your other option is to rent space (usually a chair) in a salon. You may still be treated like an employee if you choose this option. The owner cannot make you attend meetings, work certain hours or do chores. However, they may require that you use certain products and you may get charged back for back-bar use. You set your own hours, prices and are responsible for the cost of tools and products you use. Each salon will have its own contract explaining what is expected and included. Negotiate before signing the contract.
Regardless of which type of booth rental you choose you are responsible for your own finances. It is imperative to have a business bank account and a business credit card. Do not mix your business and personal finances. Having your own payment processing platform is advisable. Consider hiring a bookkeeper to track all of your income and expenses.
As a booth renter, don’t forget about marketing your business. If you rely on your landlord to do all the marketing you will miss out. Having your own name and logo is key to marketing. In today’s world it is a necessity to have an online presence so consider a website. Websites allow you to promote your business, sell your products and book appointments. They are effective tools to provide customers with more information about you and your business. You can add links to your social accounts, include customer reviews, provide product information and create how-to videos.
